MPFL Reconstruction

MPFL (medial patellofemoral ligament) reconstruction) is a surgical procedure to rebuild a torn ligament on the inside of the knee and stop the kneecap from slipping out of place.

Objectives of the procedure:

  • To overcome the recurrence of kneecap (patella) dislocations or instability.
  • To repairs the damage caused by sports injuries, trauma, or loose joints.
  • Used when rest, braces, and physical therapy are unable to overcome the problem.

How the Surgery Works

  • The surgeon uses a tissue graft to replace the damaged ligament.
  • This graft is usually taken from the patients your own hamstring tendon or of a donor.
  • Small cuts are made to attach the new tissue to your kneecap and thighbone (femur) using screws or anchors.
  • The operation generally takes one to two hours.
